Bengaluru, 18th July: Chennamma Deve Gowda, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, passed away on Saturday after suffering a massive cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. She was in her late 80s.

According to hospital authorities, Chennamma had been admitted to Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road on Wednesday night for treatment of a respiratory ailment. Doctors said she had been responding well to treatment before suffering a sudden cardiac arrest at around 4 p.m.

“We regret to inform that Mrs Chennamma suffered a massive cardiac arrest despite being on the road to recovery,” the hospital said in a statement.

Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, and other members of the family were present at the hospital when she passed away.

Chennamma married Deve Gowda in 1954, and the couple had four sons and two daughters, including Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and MLA H.D. Revanna.

Despite belonging to one of Karnataka’s most prominent political families, Chennamma largely stayed away from public life. Deve Gowda often credited her with managing the family and supporting him throughout his political career.

She had survived an acid attack in 2001, which was reportedly linked to a family dispute.

Political leaders expressed condolences over her demise, remembering her quiet strength and the values she instilled in her family. Her son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, has often acknowledged that his mother’s guidance played a significant role in shaping his political journey.
