New Delhi, 27th July: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said members of the LGBTQ+ community are human beings who have the right to live with dignity and should not be isolated from society.
Speaking at an event, Bhagwat said such communities have always existed in society and have long been recognised in Indian traditions. He said some individuals are born with such characteristics, while others develop them later due to different factors, but all deserve respect.
“They are also human beings and have the right to live. They should not be isolated from society. In the broader social order, there is a place for them as well. Do not look down upon them,” Bhagwat said.
Referring to Indian traditions, he cited the example of Shikhandi from the Mahabharata and said society historically had space for such individuals. He also noted that such communities have their own places of worship and religious leaders, including participation in the Kumbh Mela.
Bhagwat further said Indian society traditionally addressed such issues with empathy rather than creating unnecessary public controversy. He also remarked that over time, India had drifted away from many of its traditions due to historical invasions and colonial influence, leading to an inferiority complex about its own cultural practices.
He added that blindly adopting Western perspectives without understanding their limitations had created new social challenges and called for a more balanced approach rooted in Indian traditions.
