New Delhi, 28th July: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has appealed for humility and restraint amid growing controversy over viral videos showing leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) dancing and celebrating following the resignation of former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Reacting to the criticism surrounding the videos, Wangchuk, who had observed a hunger strike at the CJP protest site, said, “Victory must be accompanied by humility,” urging supporters to celebrate “with dignity, restraint, and responsibility.”
He said maintaining respect and humility was as important as achieving success, as the videos continued to draw criticism on social media.
The controversy intensified after Meghnad, a commentator, YouTuber and founding member of the online platform associated with CJP, criticised the party leadership for celebrating while several protesters were allegedly left without food and travel arrangements after the month-long protest at Jantar Mantar concluded.
In an Instagram post, Meghnad claimed he and a few others had arranged food and transport for dozens of volunteers and protesters using their own resources.
“While you are partying, 70+ protesters and students were left starving in Delhi because you decided not to care. Congratulations CJP, you have become just another political party after all,” he wrote.
Responding to the criticism, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das defended the celebration, saying it reflected the spirit of the younger generation.
“We can sit on the road for as long as it takes. We can protest while dancing. We can organise while sipping cold coffee. That’s just how this generation is—confident, creative, resilient and impossible to stereotype,” Das said in a post on X.
He also said many critics failed to understand the approach of younger generations toward political activism.
Later, Das clarified that the gathering was primarily organised to honour volunteers who had participated in the movement.
“What preceded the dancing was a heart-to-heart interaction with every volunteer. We were sitting on the floor and speaking to them individually, and it was necessary to acknowledge their contribution,” he told mediapersons.
The videos continue to fuel debate online, with critics questioning the timing of the celebrations while supporters remain divided over the party’s conduct following the end of the protest.
