New Delhi, 28th July: Meta has apologised to the Centre after a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefly blocked on Facebook in India, attributing the removal to a technical glitch.
According to sources, the social media company acknowledged that the content had been removed in error and confirmed that it had since been restored.
“The content was removed in error and has since been restored,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
Government sources said the Centre is treating the incident seriously and is examining both Meta’s explanation and the circumstances that led to the temporary removal of the video. Officials may summon Meta representatives and concerned officials to seek a detailed explanation.
The video, uploaded on July 23, featured Prime Minister Modi’s message to Gen Z during a student protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). In his address, the Prime Minister said the government would introduce tougher measures to curb question paper leaks.
Before the video was restored, Facebook users in India were shown a notice stating that the content had been withheld in the country following a legal request. The clip had already garnered millions of views before access to it was temporarily restricted.
The incident has sparked fresh scrutiny over content moderation practices on global social media platforms, with the government reviewing whether the temporary blocking resulted from a technical lapse or any other procedural issue.
