New Delhi, 29th July: Delhi Police have issued notices to several social media accounts, including those of some news portals, seeking information about individuals who allegedly posted abusive content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during recent student protests in the national capital.
According to police sources, notices have been served to multiple X accounts after a review of content uploaded during and after the demonstrations. The exact number of accounts that received notices has not been disclosed.
Officials said the police have been scrutinising posts, videos and comments across various social media platforms to identify possible legal violations and assess their impact on public order.
The action comes days after Delhi Police said they had identified more than 400 social media handles allegedly linked to Pakistan that were circulating fake narratives, rumours and deepfake videos related to the protests.
Two days earlier, the police had directed several social media platforms to remove posts and videos containing offensive and abusive remarks against the Prime Minister that were uploaded during the student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and the violence linked to the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.
According to Delhi Police, multiple posts containing abusive language directed at the Prime Minister surfaced across social media platforms during the protests and subsequent unrest.
Officials said the force’s social media monitoring team has been continuously tracking online activity to identify objectionable content. Upon detecting such material, notices are being issued to the concerned social media intermediaries directing them to remove the content in accordance with applicable rules.
Police said several posts and videos containing abusive remarks against the Prime Minister have already been taken down following the issuance of notices.
The cyber and social media units of Delhi Police continue to monitor online activity related to the protests and are examining additional content for possible violations of law.
