PM Modi Launches Nationwide Anti-Drug Campaign

New Delhi, 2nd Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, calling upon young Indians and citizens across the country to join a nationwide movement against substance abuse.

Addressing a nationwide gathering through video conference, PM Modi said more than one crore young people were connected to the programme from over 28,000 locations.

“I urge every citizen, especially our youth, to join this movement,” Modi said, stressing that a developed India would require a generation that is physically and mentally healthy, confident and free from destructive habits such as drugs.

The Prime Minister said the initiative, which began as a pilot project in Kashi last year, has now evolved into a national campaign with the support of more than 125 spiritual organisations and several NGOs under the Kashi Declaration.

100-Week Campaign Against Drugs
Under the campaign, activities will be organised every Sunday for 100 weeks, involving art, culture, sports, meditation and community engagement.

Modi said the coming “100 Sundays” would become 100 strong steps towards building a drug-free India. He praised students, NSS members and MY Bharat volunteers for joining the campaign and taking a pledge against substance abuse.

Calling young Indians the country’s “Amrit generation”, Modi said their energy, imagination and talent would play a decisive role in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

He warned that while India’s youth are making achievements in startups, artificial intelligence, sports and space technology, drug addiction can destroy their focus, careers and dreams while inflicting suffering on their families.

“We must protect every youth from falling into the trap of addiction,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi Urges Families to Seek Help
Modi stressed that addiction should not be treated as the end of a young person’s future and said rehabilitation, medical assistance, yoga, meditation and support from society can help people recover.

“Even if a youth has mistakenly fallen into the trap of addiction, it absolutely does not mean that all doors are closed for them,” he said.

The Prime Minister urged families not to conceal a child’s addiction because of concerns over social prestige and instead seek professional and medical assistance.

He also called for greater communication between parents and children so that warning signs can be identified before young people become trapped in substance abuse.

Modi appealed specifically to professors in colleges and universities to discuss the dangers of drug abuse with students alongside regular coursework and lead anti-addiction movements on campuses.

He also called for ending the stigma surrounding recovering addicts, describing young people who successfully overcome addiction as “real warriors” who deserve respect and another opportunity in life.

The Prime Minister said the government would continue its crackdown against drug traffickers and smugglers while simultaneously strengthening prevention and rehabilitation efforts.

Expressing confidence in the campaign, Modi said India’s youth would protect their energy by remaining free from addiction and contribute to fulfilling the country’s Viksit Bharat aspirations.
