Jaipur, 22nd Aug: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday praised the Maheshwari Samaj for its long-standing legacy of service, sacrifice and social commitment while addressing the foundation-laying ceremony of the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Jaipur.

Birla said the establishment of the medical institute marks a significant new chapter in the community’s journey of service to humanity. He recalled the Maheshwari Samaj’s historic contribution to education and social welfare, noting that its members began establishing educational institutions as early as 1926 when access to education remained limited.

The Lok Sabha Speaker also highlighted the community’s contribution to India’s freedom movement and its continued efforts to establish schools, hospitals, dispensaries, hostels, community centres and other welfare institutions.

Recalling the COVID-19 pandemic, Birla said India’s collective social consciousness and the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” provided strength to society during difficult circumstances.

He emphasised that nation-building is a shared responsibility of the government and society, with citizens, voluntary organisations and social institutions playing an equally important role. He said contributions to society could take the form of knowledge, professional expertise, hard work, dedication and selfless service, apart from financial support.

Birla stressed the importance of quality medical education, healthcare, research and innovation, particularly for people living in remote villages and far-flung areas.

He said affordable, accessible and quality healthcare should reach every section of society and should not remain beyond the reach of citizens because of geographical or economic constraints.

Expressing confidence in the new institution, Birla urged the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre to develop into a model charitable research institution. He said the institute should focus not only on patient care but also on medical and nursing education, advanced research, innovation and solutions to emerging healthcare challenges.

He further observed that wealth finds its highest purpose when used for the welfare and upliftment of society, and said individuals earn lasting respect when their resources and success are dedicated to public good.

Birla congratulated the Maheshwari Samaj and all those associated with the project, expressing confidence that the institute would become a lasting symbol of service and compassion and contribute to healthcare in Rajasthan and across the country.
