WASHINGTON –Tesla CEO and the owner of X Elon Mosk on Friday said that 11,256 Indian villages lacked 5G internet connectivity a wide rural-urban internet gap which Musk said can be served via Starlink as rural subscription density still trailing cities sharply even after a massive expansion of telecom and fibre infrastructure.
BharatNet has made around 221,000 Gram Panchayats service-ready, but operational Points of Presence stood at 80,472 as of June 2026, media reported.
Musk said the satellite internet service could serve communities that remain hardest to reach as Starlink awaits a commercial rollout in India.
“Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas,” Musk wrote on X on Friday.
His response came to a post drawn attention to gaps that persist in India’s connectivity map, including thousands of villages still without 4G access.
According to figures cited in the post reshared by Musk, 11,256 listed villages remained outside 4G coverage as of May 2026.
The rural-urban divide is also visible in internet subscription numbers.
India’s internet subscriptions reached 1.093 billion in March 2026. Of these, 440.87 million were in rural areas.
Rural internet subscription density stood at 48.31 per 100 people. Urban India was substantially higher at 126.80 subscriptions per 100 people.
The numbers form the core of the case being made for satellite broadband in places where conventional networks remain difficult to extend.
India has built an extensive fibre network under BharatNet, Musk noted.
The post said over 850,000 route-km of fibre had been laid and around 221,000 Gram Panchayats made service-ready.
The number of operational Gram Panchayat Points of Presence, however, stood at 80,472 as of June 2026, according to the figures cited.
Satellite connectivity was pitched in the post by Musk as an option for remote villages, mountainous areas, islands and disaster-hit regions where difficult terrain, infrastructure limitations or weak commercial viability can make conventional telecom expansion harder.
It also argued that direct-to-device connectivity could potentially help phones remain connected beyond normal tower coverage.
The push came as Starlink works towards starting commercial satellite internet services in India.
The post Musk responded to called for the remaining clearances to be completed and spectrum allocated so that Starlink could begin commercial operations.
Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer has also said the company remains engaged with the Indian government over its planned launch.
Media reports claimed the approval process had been frozen over geopolitical and security concerns, including concerns reportedly linked to the use of Starlink terminals during the Iran conflict.
Dreyer rejected that characterization, report stated.
“Starlink remains in active and productive discussions with the Government of India contrary to misleading stories based upon unsubstantiated claims from anonymous sources,” she said.
The latest intervention from Musk puts the focus back on the potential rural use case for the service and on the connectivity gaps that remain despite India’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure.
