BISHKEK, 31st Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on recent developments in the West Asia conflict and the evolving regional situation.
Prime Minister Modi expressed concern over the escalation of tensions in West Asia and reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi also stressed the need for continued efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
The Prime Minister called for safeguarding the freedom of navigation and commerce and emphasised that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted under any circumstances. He specifically highlighted the need to protect commercial shipping and seafarers amid the regional tensions.
During the meeting, Modi reiterated India’s readiness to work closely with Iran in multilateral organisations, including BRICS and the SCO.
The Prime Minister also conveyed that he looked forward to welcoming President Pezeshkian to India for the BRICS Summit.
