Chennai, 15th Sept: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has signed four investment agreements in the United Kingdom involving proposed investments of around ₹12,300 crore, with the potential to create nearly 9,000 jobs, according to the state government.

The largest agreement was signed with Samvardhana Motherson International Limited for an investment of ₹11,000 crore. The project is expected to generate around 7,000 jobs across design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics facilities.

Vijay also signed a ₹1,000-crore agreement with a British company, facilitated through Ernst & Young, to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai. The proposed centre, planned along the upcoming GCC corridor, is expected to create around 2,000 high-value jobs.

Another agreement with Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group will support the expansion of its GCCs in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli, with around 600 high-value jobs expected to be created.

A fourth agreement with Wilson Power Solutions involves an investment of ₹300 crore and is expected to generate around 400 jobs in Tiruvallur district.

The agreements come as part of Tamil Nadu’s efforts to attract investments in advanced manufacturing, automobiles, electric vehicles, electronics and Global Capability Centres. The state government has also been seeking to strengthen existing investments and attract new projects from European companies.

The UK visit follows the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 15. The Tamil Nadu government has said the agreement could create new opportunities for sectors including textiles, leather, footwear, auto components, engineering and electronics.

Motor sports has also been part of Vijay’s UK itinerary. He visited the Silverstone racing circuit and flagged off a race featuring actor and racer Ajith Kumar. The state government has linked the visit to plans for developing a world-class motor sports city and expanding racing-related manufacturing and allied industries in Tamil Nadu.

The investment push has drawn questions from the opposition over transparency surrounding the Chief Minister’s itinerary and investment meetings.

Responding to the criticism, TVK spokesperson P Sathya Kumar said Tamil Nadu was operating in an environment of competitive federalism, with states competing to attract investments. He said details of agreements would be made public as and when the Memoranda of Understanding are signed.

Vijay is scheduled to remain in the UK until September 16, with further investment agreements expected to be signed during the visit.
