Guwahati, 2nd Oct: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday congratulated boxer Lovlina Borgohain after she won the gold medal in the women’s 75kg category at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, calling the victory a memorable birthday gift for the pugilist.

Lovlina defeated China’s Bao Ziyi by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the final at Nishio, securing her maiden Asian Games gold. The victory also made her only the second Indian woman boxer after M.C. Mary Kom to win an Asian Games gold.

Sarma said he spoke to Lovlina over the phone and extended his greetings on behalf of the people of Assam. In a social media post, he congratulated the boxer and said there could be “no bigger gift” on one’s birthday than winning the highest honour for the country.

“We are so proud of you Lovlina! The nation is proud of you and celebrates this achievement. Assam awaits your glorious return,” Sarma said.

The Chief Minister also posted a separate birthday message, recalling Lovlina’s journey from Assam to the international stage. He said her career had reflected courage, determination and perseverance and wished her happiness, good health and further achievements.

Lovlina’s victory improves on her silver-medal finish at the previous Asian Games. Her latest achievement also ends India’s 12-year wait for a women’s boxing gold at the continental Games, following Mary Kom’s 2014 triumph.

Sarma said Lovlina was elated after the victory and added that he would meet her after she returns to Guwahati.
