Dhubri, 2nd Nov: The Dhubri eviction drive in Assam’s Alamganj area has displaced hundreds of families, as the district administration cleared around 650 bighas of land allegedly occupied illegally. The operation on Sunday involved dozens of excavators and a large police deployment, while emotional scenes unfolded near places of worship and burial grounds.
The affected settlement is located in Alamganj Part-IX under the Gauripur revenue circle. Officials said the land was government-owned and had been under alleged encroachment for several years.
Heavy Security Deployment
The administration deployed a large police contingent to oversee the operation. Assam Police Inspector General of Law and Order Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath and Senior Superintendent of Police Debashish Bora were present during the drive.
Excavators and other machinery were used to demolish structures across the identified area. The operation also affected religious and community structures, including mosques, places of worship and graveyards, prompting residents to raise slogans and gather at several locations.
Scenes of grief were reported near mausoleums and burial grounds, where residents gathered to offer prayers as demolition work continued.
Emotional Scenes During Demolition
Tensions prevailed at some locations during the operation. In one reported incident, an excavator stopped working as it approached a mausoleum, and its operator reportedly fell ill and was taken for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident were not independently established.
Dispute Over the Number of Affected Families
The number of families affected has varied across reports. The information provided in the initial account put the figure at 750, while the district administration’s account to news agencies indicated that around 550 families were affected by the clearance of 650 bighas. Other reports cited more than 640 families.
The administration had earlier said that eviction notices covered a larger area, but action was not taken on around 150 bighas where occupants had approached the court for relief. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for November 13.
The eviction has renewed concerns over the displacement of families and the future of those who have lost their homes. The administration has maintained that the action concerns alleged encroachment on government land.
