Agra, 14th April: What began as a marriage in the city of the Taj Mahal has turned into a sensational criminal case, with a bride allegedly demanding ₹90 lakh from her husband and his family, leading to accusations of extortion and threats.
According to police, the couple—Gaurav and Kalpana—married on April 29 last year, but the relationship reportedly broke down almost immediately.
Serious Allegations
As per the FIR filed by Gaurav’s sister Muskan, the bride allegedly refused to establish a physical relationship with her husband and instead demanded ₹90 lakh to continue the marriage.
The complaint further alleges that Kalpana, along with her relatives, took away jewellery belonging to both her and her mother-in-law under the pretext of wearing it.
The family also claimed that repeated pressure was exerted to transfer ₹90 lakh to the bride’s family.
Threats and Intimidation
The situation escalated when the bride reportedly left for her parental home in July, allegedly issuing threats to the family.
In a later incident in March, Kalpana and her relatives allegedly entered Gaurav’s house, locked the family inside, and issued death threats. The accused also allegedly attempted to tamper with the gas pipeline to stage an accident.
Police said the family was rescued after intervention.
Police Action
A case has been registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police under relevant sections, and an investigation is underway.
Authorities are also probing allegations that the marriage was part of a planned conspiracy to extort money, with the involvement of a matchmaker.
Officials said all angles are being examined, and strict action will be taken based on evidence.
