New Delhi, 26th Oct: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday slammed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over a controversial remark made during a public event in Patna, triggering a fresh political confrontation between the BJP and Congress.
In a post on X, Shah accused Kharge of violating political decorum by making an objectionable remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father. He alleged that Congress leaders had repeatedly made offensive comments about Modi and his family, citing earlier controversies involving remarks about the Prime Minister’s mother and his background.
Shah also accused Congress of becoming frustrated by repeated electoral defeats over the past 12 years, alleging that the party had shifted from policy-based opposition to personal attacks. He claimed that the party was losing public support and urged voters to reject such political conduct.
What Kharge Said in Patna
The controversy erupted on Sunday when Kharge was addressing a programme at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Shri Krishna Singh.
During his speech, Kharge was discussing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and said those responsible would be sent to jail. After an audience member challenged his remarks about Modi remaining in power, Kharge responded with the phrase, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” which was widely interpreted as a personal remark about the Prime Minister’s late father.
The comment drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who described it as a breach of political decency and demanded an apology.
Congress Says Remark Was Directed at RSS
Congress leaders defended Kharge, arguing that his comment referred to Modi’s ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), rather than his biological father.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said an audience member had first made a remark involving Kharge’s father, prompting the exchange. The party accused the BJP of taking Kharge’s words out of context and using the incident to target the Congress leadership.
BJP Leader Files Police Complaint
The political row escalated after BJP state working committee member Krishna Kumar filed a complaint against Kharge at Patna’s Kotwali police station, seeking an investigation into the remarks.
The man who interrupted Kharge, identified as Santosh Kumar, later described himself as a Congress worker and claimed his comments had been misunderstood. He also alleged that he was assaulted during the incident.
The episode has intensified the political exchange between the BJP and Congress, with the controversy extending beyond the original speech to questions of political language, electoral conduct and the limits of public debate.
