Guwahati, 15th July: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated further on Tuesday, with the death toll rising to four as the first wave of floods continued to affect several parts of the state. More than 35,000 people have been impacted, and authorities fear the number could increase if heavy rainfall continues in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
According to officials, the latest casualty was reported from the Chariduar revenue circle in Sonitpur district. The victim had gone missing on Monday night, and the body was recovered on Tuesday.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that 37,032 people have been affected by the floods so far, with Lakhimpur remaining the worst-hit district, accounting for 35,696 affected residents.
Floodwaters have inundated six districts—Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar—affecting 12 revenue circles and 99 villages.
Authorities said relief materials are being distributed through 20 relief distribution centres set up in the affected areas.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 16 people from Sonitpur district during rescue operations carried out over the past 24 hours.
The floods have also caused extensive damage to agriculture, submerging 1,103.94 hectares of farmland. Officials said two animals were washed away, while 16,139 livestock, including poultry, have been affected by the deluge.
The administration continues to monitor the situation closely as rising river levels and persistent rainfall pose the threat of further flooding in vulnerable districts.
