Patiala, 1st Aug: Factional tensions within the Punjab Congress spilled into the open on Saturday as supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi raised slogans during state party chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring’s address at a meeting in Samana, Patiala.

The meeting, attended by Congress’ Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and other senior leaders, had been convened to discuss organisational strategy and the party’s roadmap for upcoming elections.

As Warring rose to address party workers, a section of the gathering believed to be Channi supporters began chanting “Charanjit Singh Channi zindabad” and “bring back Channi, save Punjab,” disrupting his speech.

The incident came on the second day of Baghel’s meetings with Punjab Congress leaders. A day earlier, some party leaders had alleged that they were not invited to a meeting in Fatehgarh Sahib, triggering fresh questions over internal differences.

The latest episode has brought the rivalry between different camps in the Punjab Congress back into focus at a time when the party leadership is seeking to strengthen its organisation and project unity ahead of upcoming political contests.

Baghel’s meetings with state leaders are expected to focus on election preparations as well as organisational issues and differences within the Punjab unit.
