New York, 13th June: Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire on Friday after shares of his space technology company SpaceX surged 11 per cent during their stock market debut, propelling his personal fortune beyond the $1 trillion mark.
SpaceX shares opened at $150, up from the IPO price of $135, following what has been described as the largest initial public offering in history. The rally pushed the company’s valuation to nearly $2 trillion.
According to Reuters calculations based on company filings, Musk’s net worth has now exceeded $1.1 trillion, making him the first individual in history to cross the trillion-dollar wealth milestone. A major portion of his fortune comes from his stake in SpaceX, which is estimated to be worth around $866 billion.
SpaceX raised a record $75 billion through its IPO, valuing the company at $1.77 trillion before trading began. Investor demand was exceptionally strong, with the offering reportedly oversubscribed multiple times.
The company, founded by Musk in 2002, has evolved from a private rocket manufacturer into a global aerospace and technology giant with interests spanning satellite communications, artificial intelligence and space exploration. Investors have increasingly viewed SpaceX as one of the world’s most influential technology companies.
Musk, already the world’s richest person before the IPO, has built his fortune through holdings in SpaceX, Tesla and several other ventures, including xAI, Neuralink and X. The SpaceX listing has now widened the gap between Musk and other billionaires globally.
The historic milestone has reignited debate over wealth concentration and inequality, with critics questioning the scale of personal fortunes while supporters point to Musk’s role in advancing innovation in electric vehicles, space technology and artificial intelligence.
The SpaceX IPO is being viewed as a landmark moment for global financial markets and the private space industry, marking the first time an individual’s wealth has crossed the trillion-dollar threshold.
