India’s Exports Rise 25.41% to $82.68 Billion in August

Cumulative exports during April-August 2026-27 reach $399.27 billion, up 15.55% from the year-ago period

New Delhi, 16th Sept: India’s total exports of merchandise and services are estimated at $82.68 billion in August 2026, registering a 25.41% increase over $65.93 billion recorded in August 2025, according to data released by the government.

Total imports during the month stood at an estimated $92.09 billion, up 18.75% from $77.55 billion a year earlier. The overall trade balance stood at -$9.41 billion, compared with -$11.62 billion in August 2025.

Cumulative exports up 15.55%
During April-August 2026-27, India’s total exports of merchandise and services are estimated at $399.27 billion, compared with $345.55 billion during the corresponding period of 2025-26, marking a growth of 15.55%.

Total imports during the five-month period increased 18.01% to $459.65 billion, against $389.49 billion a year earlier. The cumulative trade deficit stood at $60.38 billion.

Merchandise exports register strong growth
Merchandise exports in August 2026 rose to $43.81 billion, compared with $34.74 billion in August 2025. Merchandise imports increased to $70.67 billion from $61.96 billion.

For April-August 2026-27, merchandise exports reached $215.91 billion, up from $183.21 billion in the year-ago period, registering growth of 17.85%.

Merchandise imports stood at $363 billion, compared with $307.09 billion previously, resulting in a merchandise trade deficit of $147.09 billion.

Electronics, petroleum and engineering goods drive growth
Several major export sectors recorded strong year-on-year growth in August.

Electronic goods exports increased 89.82%, from $2.93 billion in August 2025 to $5.55 billion in August 2026. Petroleum product exports rose 63.27% to $6.81 billion from $4.17 billion.

Engineering goods exports increased 24.86%, reaching $12.32 billion from $9.87 billion. Exports of organic and inorganic chemicals grew 16.38% to $2.80 billion, while cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups and handloom products rose 13.79% to $1.12 billion.

Other sectors registering positive growth included iron ore, meat, dairy and poultry products, handicrafts, marine products, plastics and linoleum, coffee, pharmaceuticals and gems and jewellery.

Non-petroleum exports also expand
Non-petroleum exports during August 2026 stood at $37 billion, compared with $30.57 billion in August 2025.

Non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports rose to $34.68 billion from $28.26 billion.

During April-August 2026-27, non-petroleum exports reached $180.61 billion, up from $157.89 billion in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 14.39%.

Non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery exports stood at $168.69 billion, compared with $146.52 billion a year earlier.

Services exports continue to grow
Services exports are estimated at $38.87 billion in August 2026, compared with $31.19 billion in August 2025. Services imports increased to $21.42 billion from $15.59 billion.

For April-August 2026-27, services exports are estimated at $183.36 billion, compared with $162.34 billion in the corresponding period of 2025-26. Services imports stood at $96.65 billion.

The services trade surplus during the period increased to $86.71 billion, from $79.94 billion a year earlier.

The government noted that the August services figures are estimates, as the latest RBI services-sector data available at the time covered July 2026.

Key trading partners
Among export destinations, the US, Singapore, Spain, China and Tanzania recorded notable growth in August 2026 compared with August 2025.

For April-August 2026-27, significant growth was recorded in exports to Singapore, China, the US, Tanzania and Malaysia.

On the import side, the US, Russia, China, Oman and Taiwan recorded higher imports from India in August, while Russia, China, the US, Oman and Brazil registered growth during April-August.
