New Delhi, 4th Sept: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday called for strengthening the spirit of selfless service among citizens, particularly the youth, saying that “Nar Seva is Narayana Seva” and service to society is a form of nation-building at the grassroots.
Addressing the 11th Sant Eshwar Samman-2026 in New Delhi as Chief Guest, Radhakrishnan presented the Sant Eshwar Seva Samman to individuals and organisations recognised for their exemplary contribution to society.

The Vice-President congratulated the awardees and described the Sant Eshwar Samman as a recognition of India’s enduring culture of compassion, responsibility and selfless service.
He appreciated the Sant Eshwar Foundation and Rashtriya Sewa Bharati for sustaining the awards for 11 consecutive years, saying the initiative recognises individuals who work silently to strengthen society and encourages others to follow the path of Seva.
‘Service is integral to India’s civilisational ethos’
Highlighting India’s longstanding tradition of service, Radhakrishnan said the country’s civilisational ethos has always encouraged people to rise above narrow self-interest and work for the welfare of others.
Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, he said development should not be measured only by economic growth, infrastructure or technological advancement.
A truly developed India, he said, must ensure dignity, opportunity and hope for every citizen.
The Vice-President also emphasised that every citizen is a stakeholder in the country’s progress and that individuals and organisations working for society contribute directly to nation-building at the grassroots.
Citing the Swachh Bharat Mission, he said it demonstrated how Jan Bhagidari can transform a government programme into a people’s movement.
Focus on drug-free India
Radhakrishnan also drew attention to the threat posed by narcotic drugs and substance abuse, particularly to the health and future of young people.
He highlighted the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August, and the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 Roadmap, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Vice-President described the initiatives as important steps towards creating a drug-free India.
Concluding his address, Radhakrishnan said the journey towards a developed India must be accompanied by compassion, character and social responsibility.
He called upon citizens, especially young people, to draw inspiration from the awardees and strengthen the values of Seva Bhav and Kartavya Bodh in their everyday lives.
