New Delhi, 22nd June: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of two women and illness of several workers following an ammonia leak at a private shrimp processing factory in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
The Commission observed that the incident, if confirmed, raises serious concerns related to human rights violations. It has issued notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has asked the state authorities to provide details on the health condition of affected workers and the status of compensation announced for the next of kin of the deceased.
According to reports, the leak occurred on June 21 when workers were resting in a nearby room. Around 59 workers were admitted to hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur, while the Tamil Nadu government has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
