New Delhi, 5th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked seven years since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35(A), describing August 5, 2019 as a defining milestone in India’s journey towards inclusive development.
In a post on X, Modi said the decision marked a “decisive new chapter” in the journey of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Prime Minister said the past seven years have witnessed wide-ranging transformation in the two Union Territories, including expansion of infrastructure and increased opportunities in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and sports.
He also said women and members of marginalised communities who had previously been deprived of several constitutional rights have been empowered through the full application of the Constitution of India.
Modi said this year’s anniversary carries additional significance as India commemorates the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He said Mookerjee’s commitment to national unity continues to inspire generations and that his vision found “historic fulfilment” on August 5, 2019.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, saying every citizen should have the opportunity to pursue their aspirations and contribute towards building a Viksit Bharat.
On August 5, 2019, the Centre effectively revoked the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and reorganised the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
