Tashkent, 30th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid floral tributes at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent, commemorating former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on the 60th anniversary of his passing.
Shastri passed away in Tashkent in 1966. The memorial is located on a street named after the former Prime Minister, whose legacy continues to be remembered in the Uzbek capital. A local school and the Indian Cultural Centre in Tashkent are also named after him.
After paying his respects at the memorial, Modi visited the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies, where he was received by the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan and the university’s rector.
The Prime Minister interacted with Indologists and scholars pursuing academic interests at the university’s Mahatma Gandhi Centre.
The university has a longstanding record of teaching Hindi and other Indian subjects. This year marks 80 years of Hindi teaching at the institution.
During his state visit, Modi announced the Lal Bahadur Shastri Scholarship for Hindi language for Uzbek students.
The university has also witnessed strong interest among Uzbek students in learning Hindi, reflecting the close cultural links between India and Uzbekistan. According to the information shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, more than 3,000 words are common between the Uzbek and Hindi languages.
