New Delhi, 3rd Oct: Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar joined the Indian National Congress on Saturday, October 3, at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi. Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla, along with party leaders Pawan Khera and Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav, were present at the joining ceremony.
Kakkar, who had been a prominent national spokesperson of the AAP, formally ended her association with the party before joining Congress. Former Uttar Pradesh MLA Shyam Sundar Sharma and journalist Rajat Rakesh Tandon also joined the Congress during the same programme.
Speaking after joining the Congress, Kakkar said she believed Congress could help build the kind of Delhi she wanted to see. She also praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, describing him as an “authentic” political leader and referring to his public campaign on electoral issues.
Kakkar also explained her decision to leave the AAP, saying she had reached a point where she could no longer defend what she described as “indefensible” decisions. She referred to changes she had observed in the party’s functioning and leadership.
Rajiv Shukla welcomed Kakkar, Sharma and Tandon into the Congress and said their joining would add to the party’s political outreach. Congress general secretary Syed Nasir Hussain and other senior leaders were also present.
Kakkar’s move comes amid preparations for the upcoming political contests in the region, while Congress has also been inducting leaders and public figures into its organisation.
