Sultanpur, 26th Oct: Several people, including Congress workers and security personnel, were injured after five vehicles in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s convoy collided with an ambulance on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, police said.
The accident occurred near Haliyapur, around 100 kilometres from Lucknow. According to police, the five vehicles involved were positioned at the rear of the convoy. Rahul Gandhi was safe following the incident.
CCTV footage from the accident site showed an ambulance in the right-hand fast lane, while several vehicles appeared bunched together in the adjoining lanes. A Scorpio SUV with a badly damaged bonnet was seen stopped in front of the ambulance after the collision.
Gandhi had arrived at Lucknow airport earlier in the day before travelling by road towards Sultanpur, approximately 135 kilometres away. The collision took place when the convoy was around 35 kilometres from its destination.
Court Appearance in Defamation Case
Gandhi was scheduled to appear before a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur in connection with a defamation case involving alleged objectionable remarks about Amit Shah, who was BJP president at the time.
His physical presence was required for the pronouncement of the judgment, which was expected on Monday.
The case dates back to August 4, 2018, when Vijay Mishra, a BJP leader and former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, filed a complaint against Gandhi. The complaint concerned alleged remarks about Shah made during a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
Further details about the condition of those injured and the circumstances leading to the collision were awaited.
