Kairana, 26th Oct: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a fresh attack on Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, suggesting that the party should be renamed “Samajwadi Yadav Parivar” over what he alleged was inadequate representation of Muslim leaders in key constituencies.
Addressing a public rally in Kairana on Sunday, Owaisi cited Azamgarh and Firozabad to question the Samajwadi Party’s political representation. He claimed that constituencies previously represented by Muslim MPs were now represented by members of Akhilesh Yadav’s family.
“Akhilesh Yadav, the name of your party should be changed from Samajwadi to Samajwadi Yadav Parivar,” Owaisi said, sharpening his criticism of the SP as political activity gathers pace ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Owaisi Targets SP Over Muzaffarnagar Riots
The AIMIM chief also criticised the Samajwadi Party over the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, which occurred when Akhilesh Yadav was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Owaisi alleged that around 50,000 people were displaced during the violence and claimed that families who had lived in their villages for generations were forced to leave their homes. He also referred to attacks on women and children who were orphaned during the unrest.
Holding the then SP government responsible for its handling of the situation, Owaisi questioned the party’s record on protecting affected communities. His remarks formed part of a broader challenge to the SP’s claim to represent minority interests.
Opposition Parties Accused of Remaining Silent
Owaisi also accused opposition parties of failing to raise issues affecting minorities and other disadvantaged communities. Referring to alleged mosque demolitions and police encounters under the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh, he claimed that opposition leaders had not adequately challenged these actions.
The allegations reflect the growing political contest over minority representation and the record of successive governments in the state.
Alliance Question Remains Open
Earlier, Owaisi had expressed willingness to work with opposition parties to prevent the BJP from returning to power in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term. He reiterated that AIMIM was prepared to cooperate with parties sharing that objective.
However, his latest criticism of Akhilesh Yadav highlights the tensions surrounding any potential alliance, particularly over political representation and the role of Muslim leadership. No alliance agreement between AIMIM and the Samajwadi Party has been established in the reports available.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, Owaisi’s remarks add to the political debate over representation, past governance and the competing strategies of opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh.
