Jaipur, 15th July: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said that while winning elections is important, serving the people is even more important, stressing that the true measure of public life lies in sincere service rather than electoral victories.
Addressing the valedictory session of the Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra: Former and Sitting Members’ Conclave, organised as part of the 75th-year celebrations of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, the Vice-President said democracy thrives when elected representatives place national interest above all else and remain committed to the Constitution and the people.
He described State Legislatures as the “living heartbeat of Indian democracy”, saying that while Parliament reflects the aspirations of the nation, State Assemblies give voice to the hopes and concerns of every village, town and family.
Emphasising healthy democratic functioning, Shri Radhakrishnan said differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, but lawmakers must remain united in their commitment to constitutional values.
“We may agree to disagree, but we should all agree on one thing—our unwavering commitment to the people and the Constitution,” he said.
The Vice-President also underlined the importance of meaningful legislative functioning, stating that debate, discussion and even disruption should ultimately lead to decision-making for the benefit of the people.
Highlighting the role of legislative committees, he recalled his tenure as a Lok Sabha member and said constructive suggestions made through committee work had contributed to major policy initiatives, including the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme for the textile sector.
He urged legislators to remain accessible and empathetic towards citizens, quoting the Thirukkural to emphasise that leaders who listen with humility earn lasting public trust.
Recalling Rajasthan’s rich legacy of courage and patriotism, Shri Radhakrishnan said every generation from the state has strengthened India’s democratic traditions. Drawing inspiration from history, he remarked that while Maharana Pratap is remembered for his valour, history also honours the loyalty and sacrifice of Chetak, underscoring that every sincere contribution leaves a lasting legacy.
Invoking the Bhagavad Gita, the Vice-President called upon legislators to perform their duties selflessly without seeking rewards, adding that integrity, humility and dedication are essential for building Viksit Bharat@2047.
During the event, Shri Radhakrishnan also honoured former Speakers, Deputy Speakers and former and sitting members of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for their contributions to the state’s democratic and legislative traditions.
Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel, Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully and several current and former legislators attended the programme.
