Panihati, 24th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that a “wave of change” in West Bengal has been reinforced by the first phase of Assembly elections, claiming that the voter turnout signalled growing support for the BJP.

Addressing a rally in Panihati under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, Modi said the high participation in Phase 1 had “sealed” the shift in public sentiment and described it as an indication of the BJP’s prospects in the state.

He accused the ruling All India Trinamool Congress of undermining democratic institutions, alleging that voters are now seeking change. The Prime Minister said the second phase of polling would further strengthen this momentum.

Modi also claimed that the ruling party was “rattled” after the first phase and alleged attempts to influence the electoral process, while asserting that such efforts would not impact the final outcome.

Stepping up his campaign, he targeted the TMC on issues of women’s safety, calling it an “anti-women party” and contrasting it with the BJP’s focus on women-led development.

Referring to candidates fielded by the BJP, he said the party has given representation to individuals who have faced injustice, including women from high-profile cases in the state.

The remarks come after the first phase of polling recorded turnout close to 92 per cent, reflecting strong voter participation. The second phase of elections is scheduled for April 29, with counting set for May 4.
