Bhiwandi, 31st July: At least nine people were killed after a portion of a four-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi late Thursday night, with several others feared trapped under the rubble, officials said on Friday.
The incident occurred while repair work was underway at the Kohinoor Building in the Balaji Nagar area of the powerloom town.
Officials said a portion of the building collapsed at around 11.30 pm on Thursday, triggering a major rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
The four-storey structure comprised 48 rooms, with 12 on each floor, according to municipal officials. The civic body had already declared the building dangerous.
Around 9 pm, residents reportedly heard loud cracking sounds coming from the structure. Sensing danger, local residents began evacuating families from the building and helped move several occupants to safer locations.
However, while some residents were still attempting to leave the premises, the building’s ‘B’ wing collapsed, trapping people beneath the debris, an official said.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) and the local fire brigade were deployed for search and rescue operations.
A dog squad, four fire engines, two ambulances and heavy earth-moving machinery have also been pressed into service to clear the rubble and locate those feared trapped.
Rescue operations remained underway as authorities searched the debris for survivors. Officials are yet to confirm the total number of people who may still be trapped.
