Lucknow, 23rd April: Uttar Pradesh’s flagship infrastructure project, the Ganga Expressway, is set to be inaugurated this month, promising to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj to around five hours.

The 594-kilometre-long, six-lane greenfield expressway has been designed with advanced infrastructure, including a 3.5-km airstrip capable of handling emergency landings of fighter jets and transport aircraft. The airstrip is located in Shahjahanpur district.

A major portion of the project—around 464 km—has been constructed by the Adani Group.

The expressway passes through 12 districts, including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli and Pratapgarh, enhancing regional connectivity across the state. It is also planned to be extended towards Haridwar in the future.

Equipped with modern safety features, the corridor includes CCTV cameras every kilometre, speed monitoring systems every 10 kilometres, and continuous fencing. Street lighting has been installed at key points, while blinkers run along the entire stretch.

Nine facility centres have been developed, offering fuel stations, EV charging points, food courts, motels, trauma centres and parking spaces. Authorities said this is the first expressway in India to include dedicated trauma centres, supported by partnerships with private hospitals.

Emergency response infrastructure includes ambulances, cranes and tow-away vehicles stationed every 50 kilometres. Sidelanes and underpasses have also been built to facilitate local movement.

The expressway will allow vehicles to cover the full stretch at a toll cost of approximately ₹1,300.

Construction began in November 2022 and was completed in about 1,000 days. Officials said the project progressed at an average pace of one kilometre every two days.

In addition to connectivity, the expressway is expected to boost industrial growth, with logistics hubs, warehouses and manufacturing clusters planned along the route. It will also serve as a key religious tourism corridor, improving access to destinations such as Garh Mukteshwar, Varanasi and Prayagraj.

The Ganga Expressway becomes the third such highway in Uttar Pradesh with airstrip capability, after the Lucknow-Agra and Poorvanchal expressways.
