Guwahati 6th April: The Congress on Monday approached the Election Commission seeking cancellation of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s candidature. It alleged that he failed to disclose his wife’s offshore assets in the election affidavit.
The complaint was filed by Jalukbari candidate Bidisha Neog.It came a day after the party questioned Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family owned properties.It claims him to have properties in Dubai and companies in Wyoming, USA, or have parked assets in shell firms. He has denied all allegations.
In Bidisha Neog’s submission to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, she claimed the affidavit excluded mandatory disclosures of foreign assets. It Cited documents allegedly from Dubai’s land authorities. She said Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, owned two properties in Al Barsha South Fourth.
She called it a “deliberate non-disclosure,” Neog said that the nomination should be rejected under the law. There should be a inquiry into the alleged suppression of information and a legal action.
The Congress has also moved the Enforcement Directorate.It urged a probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. It alleged undisclosed assets in Dubai and the United States.
On Sunday, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that Sarma’s wife held multiple foreign passports of abroad. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday dismissed the claims.It accused the opposition of relying on misinformation from a Pakistani social media group. Congress minister, Gaurav Gogoi hit back.He challenged Sarma to deny the allegations under oath of Bhagavad Gita.
