Guwahati, 8th April: A political controversy has erupted in Assam after the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Congress of making remarks that allegedly hurt religious sentiments during an election rally.
According to BJP leaders, statements made during a rally in Nilambazar in Sribhumi district on April 6 were objectionable and amounted to an insult to elements associated with Sanatan traditions. The party alleged that the remarks targeted symbolism linked to Lord Shiva, triggering strong reactions.
BJP spokesperson Pranjal Kalita said the comments were “irresponsible and divisive,” accusing the Congress of engaging in vote bank politics. He claimed that such statements could disturb social harmony and were made with an intent to polarise voters ahead of the elections.
Taking formal action, the Assam BJP has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Basistha Police Station in Guwahati. The party has also submitted a complaint to the Assam State Election Commission, demanding strict legal action over the alleged remarks.
The BJP further stated that any attempt to hurt religious sentiments or misuse election platforms for divisive narratives should be dealt with firmly under the law.
The Congress has not issued an official response to the allegations so far.
The development comes amid an intensifying political contest in Assam ahead of the Assembly elections, with parties sharpening their rhetoric and targeting each other over ideological and cultural issues.
