WASHINGTON: Iranian Embassy in Ghana on Wednesday took a sharp dig at US President Donald Trump over his criticism of Pope Leo, dubbed him “Power fool” and “Commander in Grief”.
In a sarcastic social media post addressed Italy, Iran in Ghana wrote, “Your PM just defended Pope and lost an ally in Washington — the Commander in Grief, yet the most ‘power fool’ man on earth.”
The Embassy suggested Iran as a replacement for the lost ally in the US.
“We’d like to apply for the vacancy. Our qualifications: 7,000 years of civilization, a shared love of poetry, architecture, and food that takes longer to prepare than Trump’s attention span,” the post said in a humorous tone.
Iranian Embassy referredbila “cold” bilateral ties between Tehran and Rome.
“The only thing Iran and Italy have ever fought over is who invented ice cream. Faloodeh came first. Gelato came louder. We’ve been in a ‘cold’ war over this for 2,000 years,” it added.
Trump had called Pope Leo “weak” for criticized US attack on Iran and demanding peace.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defended the Pontiff, stated that as the Catholic Church head, he is right to condemn all forms of war.
“I find President Trump’s remarks about the Holy Father unacceptable,” Meloni said in a statement.
“The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and it is right and proper that he call for peace and condemn all forms of war.”
