Mirzapur, 23rd April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the loss of lives in a road accident in Mirzapur district and announced ex-gratia compensation for the victims.

At least 11 people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision near Drummondganj on Wednesday evening after a truck rammed into a car, a Bolero and a trailer, triggering a fire in an SUV, police said.

Nine occupants of the SUV were burnt alive following the collision. Several others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.

The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

In a post on X, Modi said he was deeply anguished by the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the incident as tragic and said instructions have been issued to ensure proper medical treatment for those injured.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed grief over the incident and conveyed condolences to the affected families.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
