Kolkata, 24th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spent time along the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, highlighting its cultural significance and reaffirming his commitment to the development of West Bengal.
Sharing images from his visit on social media platform X, Modi described the Ganga as deeply connected to Bengal’s identity. He said the river holds a special place in the lives of Bengalis and represents the spirit of an ancient civilisation.
During the visit, the Prime Minister interacted with boatmen and morning walkers, praising their dedication and work ethic. He said the interaction provided an opportunity to reiterate the Centre’s commitment to the state’s growth and prosperity.
Modi also shared photographs of the river and noted glimpses of landmarks such as the Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Setu, describing the experience as a “very special morning”.
The visit comes amid the ongoing Assembly elections in West Bengal. The first phase of polling was held on Thursday, recording high voter participation, while the second phase is scheduled for April 29. Counting of votes will take place on May 4.
According to the Election Commission of India, voter turnout in the first phase crossed 91 per cent, with several districts reporting participation above 90 per cent.
The Prime Minister has intensified campaigning in the state ahead of the next phase of polling.
