Patna, 7th May: Nishant Kumar, the 51-year-old son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was sworn in as a minister in the Bihar cabinet on Wednesday, formally entering active politics after years of speculation.

Speaking after the oath ceremony, Nishant Kumar said he would work under the guidance of his father and the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

“I will try to live up to the trust placed in me by senior JD(U) leaders and work with honesty. I will continue the development path shown by my father for Bihar,” he told NDTV.

His induction comes weeks after Nitish Kumar moved to the Rajya Sabha, triggering a leadership transition in the state and intensifying speculation about Nishant Kumar’s political future.

While there had been earlier discussions around a possible Deputy Chief Minister role, the position eventually went to senior JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav under the party quota.

Party insiders, however, suggest Nishant Kumar’s role could expand further in the future as the JD(U) seeks continuity in leadership and organisational coordination.

For years, Bihar politics has witnessed speculation over Nishant Kumar’s entry into public life. In 2025, rumours of his electoral debut surfaced but faded after he was not fielded in the Assembly elections.

Earlier, Nishant Kumar had repeatedly expressed disinterest in politics, once stating that spirituality—not public life—was his primary focus.

JD(U) leaders now view his cabinet induction as a move that could strengthen the party’s future leadership structure and maintain synergy between the government and organisation.
