Kolkata, 8th May: The mother of Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, has accused the All India Trinamool Congress of being behind her son’s murder after he was shot dead near his home in Madhyamgram on Wednesday night.
Rath was killed less than 200 metres from his residence in North 24 Parganas when unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on his SUV at point-blank range.
“I hold the TMC responsible, it is their gundagardi,” Rath’s mother Hasirani Rath told NDTV, demanding justice for her son.
Visuals from the scene showed bullet holes on the left front window of the Mahindra Scorpio in which Rath was travelling. His driver, Buddhadeb, sustained injuries in the attack and was hospitalised.
Hasirani Rath said she learned about the killing through television reports and appealed for strict punishment for those responsible.
“I do not want the death sentence. I want them jailed for life. I am also a mother and do not want another child to die,” she said.
Suvendu Adhikari described the incident as a “cold-blooded” and “pre-planned” murder, alleging that the attackers had conducted reconnaissance for several days before carrying out the shooting.
The BJP leader also linked the killing to the recent Assembly election results in West Bengal, claiming Rath was targeted because he worked closely with him after his electoral victory over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.
According to Adhikari, the post-mortem report confirmed that four bullets were fired at Rath.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress condemned the killing and demanded a court-monitored CBI investigation into the incident. The party accused “BJP-backed miscreants” of attempting to fuel post-poll unrest.
Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder, while security has been tightened in the area amid escalating political tensions.
