Kolkata, 15th May: The Government of West Bengal on Friday suspended three senior IPS officers over alleged mishandling and dereliction of duty during the initial investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.
The suspended officers include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former deputy commissioner Indira Mukherjee and former deputy commissioner Abhishek Gupta.
According to reports, the decision followed a departmental probe initiated against the officers over their handling of the case after the crime that took place in August 2024.
The state government alleged that the officers were involved in mishandling aspects of the investigation, including allegedly offering money to the victim’s parents and addressing an unauthorised press conference linked to the case.
Officials clarified that the disciplinary proceedings are separate from the criminal investigation being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The state government said it would not interfere in the actual investigation of the rape-murder case, which is currently being argued before the courts.
The departmental inquiry and disciplinary proceedings will reportedly be supervised by the state home secretary under the guidance of the chief secretary.
The RG Kar hospital rape-murder case had triggered nationwide outrage and protests after a woman doctor was found dead at the state-run hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.
The case was later handed over to the CBI following public pressure and judicial intervention.
