Ex-Army officer and senior BJP leader breathed his last after prolonged illness

Dehradun, 19th May: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister, retired Major General and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 91.

Popularly known as “General Sahab”, Khanduri had been battling age-related ailments and was hospitalised multiple times in recent months.

His daughter Ritu Khanduri Bhushan confirmed that he breathed his last around 11 am.

Khanduri is survived by his wife Aruna, son Manish and daughter Ritu Khanduri Bhushan.

Before joining politics in 1991, Khanduri served in the Indian Army and retired with the rank of Major General.

Known for his disciplined and straightforward administrative style, he served twice as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He first assumed office in 2007 after the BJP formed the government in the state.

He resigned in 2009, taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in all five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand, before returning as Chief Minister again in 2011.

Khanduri also served as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Cabinet led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

During his tenure at the Centre, he played a major role in implementing the Golden Quadrilateral highway project connecting key parts of the country.

Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over his demise and said his commitment to development, transparent governance and public welfare would always be remembered.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of the veteran BJP leader and said Khanduri made invaluable contributions both in the armed forces and in public life.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described Khanduri’s death as an irreparable loss to the state and national politics.

Dhami said the late leader’s simplicity, discipline and development-oriented governance would continue to inspire future generations.
