Kolkata, 20th June: Senior Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal minister Jyotipriya Mallick on Friday resigned from all organisational posts of the party, citing health issues just days after being inducted into the TMC’s National Working Committee.

Mallick said his deteriorating health due to high blood sugar and diabetes-related kidney complications made it difficult for him to continue with organisational responsibilities.

“I am a patient of high blood sugar. My kidney has already been affected by diabetes. In such a situation, it is medically impossible for me to remain associated with the organisational activities of the Trinamool Congress,” Mallick said.

A veteran TMC leader, Mallick served as a legislator from Gaighata in North 24 Parganas district from 2001 to 2011 and later represented Habra Assembly constituency from 2011 until his defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on October 27, 2023, in connection with the multi-crore ration distribution scam in the state while serving as the Food and Supplies Minister. At the time of his arrest, he was holding the Forest Minister’s portfolio.

After spending over a year in ED and judicial custody, Mallick was granted bail in January 2025. However, he was not re-inducted into the Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet and continued only as a ruling party legislator.

Despite the controversy, the Trinamool Congress had fielded him again from Habra in the recent Assembly elections, where he lost to BJP candidate Debdas Mondal by over 31,000 votes.

Considered a close confidant of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mallick had often received public support from her, including criticism of his arrest, which she had termed an act of political vendetta.
