Guwahati, 25th June: Police in Guwahati detained ten individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals during a verification drive in the Paltan Bazar area on Tuesday night after they allegedly failed to produce valid identity or travel documents.

According to police sources, the group came under scrutiny during a routine checking operation. When questioned, they were reportedly unable to furnish satisfactory proof of identity or documents establishing their legal entry into India, prompting authorities to take them into custody for further investigation.

Following preliminary interrogation at Paltan Bazar Police Station, the detainees were handed over to the Border Police for detailed verification of their nationality and immigration status.

Officials said the verification process has since been completed and that, during questioning, the detained individuals allegedly admitted to being citizens of Bangladesh. Based on the findings, authorities have initiated the process of deporting them across the international border in accordance with established legal procedures.

Investigators are also examining the role of the lodge where the group had been staying. The owner, identified as Hridoy Deka, is under investigation for allegedly failing to verify and maintain proper identity records of the occupants before providing accommodation, as required under lodging regulations.

The latest operation comes less than a week after police detained 13 suspected Bangladeshi nationals from Guwahati’s Arya Nagar locality on June 19. Officials said those individuals were also unable to produce valid documents and were deported after verification.

Security agencies have intensified verification drives and surveillance across Guwahati as part of ongoing efforts to identify and take action against illegal immigrants residing in Assam without valid documentation.
