New Delhi, 25th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to those who defended democratic values during the Emergency, describing the 1975–77 period as one of the darkest chapters in India’s history and reaffirming the nation’s commitment to safeguarding the Constitution.
In a post on X marking Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, the Prime Minister said the Emergency was a direct assault on the Constitution, during which civil liberties were suspended, freedom of expression was curtailed, political leaders, journalists and social workers were jailed, and democratic institutions came under attack.
At the same time, Modi said the period highlighted the extraordinary courage and resilience of countless citizens who refused to remain silent and upheld the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
Reaffirming India’s democratic commitment, the Prime Minister said the Constitution embodies the aspirations, rights and duties of 140 crore Indians and pledged to continue strengthening the nation’s democratic foundations.
“Guided by the spirit of our Constitution, we will build an India that remains ever committed to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity,” he said.
The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam emphasising the importance of freedom and reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting democracy, the Constitution and the rights of every citizen.
