Dhaka, 24 th July : Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on July 24, 2026, nearly two years ahead of the end of his five-year term, citing serious health concerns. The 76-year-old leader, diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy causing brief losses of consciousness, as well as heart and kidney complications, submitted his resignation to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
Following Shahabuddin’s departure, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the role of interim president, in accordance with constitutional protocol. A new presidential election must take place within 90 days.
Shahabuddin, a veteran Awami League politician and close ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, took office in April 2023. His resignation comes at a politically sensitive moment, amid reports of Hasina’s possible return from exile and the absence of her allies in major constitutional posts.
Political analysts say this development adds to Bangladesh’s current political instability, as the country prepares for a new phase of leadership.
