India Adds Nearly 20,000 MBBS Seats, Doctor Ratio 1:778
Government says MBBS seats reached 1.29 lakh and PG seats climbed to 86,360 by AY 2025-26

New Delhi, 25th July: India has significantly expanded its medical education capacity, with MBBS seats increasing to 1,28,976 and postgraduate (PG) medical seats rising to 86,360 in the academic year (AY) 2025-26, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday.
According to information provided by the National Medical Commission (NMC), MBBS seats increased from 1,09,115 in AY 2023-24 to 1,28,976 in AY 2025-26, reflecting the government’s continued focus on strengthening medical education infrastructure.
The number of PG medical seats also witnessed substantial growth, rising from 31,185 in AY 2023-24 to 86,360 in AY 2025-26.
The government further stated that, as per the Indian Medical Register (IMR), the country currently has 15,35,155 registered allopathic doctors. In addition, there are 7,51,768 registered practitioners in the AYUSH system, taking the total number of registered medical practitioners to more than 22.86 lakh.
Based on an assumption that 80 per cent of registered practitioners in both the allopathic and AYUSH systems are available for service, the doctor-population ratio in India is estimated at 1:778, indicating improved access to healthcare professionals across the country.
