New Delhi, 17th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims of the stampede at Bihar’s Ashokdham Temple in Lakhisarai district.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the incident will receive ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF, while those injured will be provided ₹50,000 each.

In a post on X, the PMO said, “PM @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the unfortunate incident in Lakhisarai, Bihar. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”

The announcement comes after a stampede at the Ashokdham Temple during heavy rush on the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan claimed the lives of seven devotees and left several others injured. Preliminary reports indicate that panic spread after rumours of a live electric wire circulated among the crowd following the fall of a pole, triggering the stampede.

The Bihar government had earlier announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh for the families of those who died in the incident. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
