New Delhi, 22nd Aug: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday passed a resolution condemning the Congress decision to restrict the singing of Vande Mataram to its first two stanzas at party functions, asserting that there would be no compromise on the honour and legacy of the national song for political convenience or appeasement.

The resolution was adopted at a meeting of the BJP’s newly appointed office-bearers in New Delhi, chaired by party president Nitin Nabin.

Sharing the resolution on X, Nabin said the BJP had “strongly condemned and unequivocally opposed” the Congress Working Committee’s August 19 decision to reaffirm its 1937 position on singing only the first two verses of Vande Mataram at Congress functions.

The BJP said it would oppose any attempt to subject the national song to “communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote-bank politics.” Nabin said the party would not accept any compromise with the honour and historical legacy of Vande Mataram.

The party also announced a nationwide awareness campaign to take the history, meaning, national significance and heritage of Vande Mataram to every part of the country.

The campaign will particularly focus on younger generations, with the BJP saying it aims to ensure that the complete national song and its historical association with India’s freedom movement are not forgotten.

According to Nabin, the BJP will also disseminate Mahatma Gandhi’s views on Vande Mataram, including his description of the song as an “anti-imperialist slogan” associated with national sentiment.

The party said the campaign would seek to familiarise citizens with the complete version of Vande Mataram, described in the resolution as comprising six verses, and its role in India’s independence movement.

Nabin said the BJP would work to protect the “honour, dignity, heritage and national character” of Purna Vande Mataram, making the issue a prominent part of its nationwide outreach.
