Assam Pitches Science-Led Growth Push
Jitendra Singh says Assam can leverage science, space and biotechnology to accelerate development in the Northeast

New Delhi, 2nd Sept: Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Ranjeet Kumar Dass met Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh on Wednesday and discussed Assam’s development, growing economic significance and the potential for technology-driven growth in the Northeast.
During the interaction, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the development taking place in Assam and said several projects in the state had been put on track with the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Union Minister stressed the Centre’s focus on promoting innovation, scientific research and technology-driven development across the Northeastern region. Discussions covered the potential expansion of science and technology infrastructure in Assam, promotion of startups and incubation centres, and initiatives to encourage scientific temper among young people.
Singh highlighted programmes of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) that could support these objectives.
The Minister also discussed applications of technologies under the Department of Space and Department of Atomic Energy for development in remote and difficult terrains. These include the use of geospatial technology for planning, disaster management and improving agricultural productivity.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said Assam had witnessed significant changes over the past decade, with the state moving beyond challenges associated with protests and insurgency.
He said peace in the state had created conditions for greater development and integration, bringing Assam into the broader development narrative and India’s growth journey.
The Minister also recalled his association with the Northeast during his seven-year tenure in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
The meeting reflected discussions on Assam’s continued development and the scope for using science and technology to support growth across the state and the wider Northeast.
