BLOs First Link Between ECI and Citizens: CEC

Panaji, 2nd Sept: Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday described Booth Level Officers (BLOs) as the first point of contact between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and citizens, while underlining their key role in maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls.

The CEC interacted with more than 1,000 BLOs from across Goa during an interaction programme held in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar described BLOs as a foundational pillar of the world’s largest democracy. He said the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections in India are carried out strictly in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws and instructions issued by the ECI.

Highlighting the importance of BLOs at the grassroots level, the CEC said they serve as the first interface of the Election Commission with citizens. He also commended Goa’s BLOs for their continued contribution to the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls.

Kumar said BLOs play an important role in safeguarding the integrity of electoral rolls. He noted that the electoral rolls and the wider election process are also concurrently audited by Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by recognised political parties, as well as polling and counting agents representing candidates.

During the programme, short videos explaining the roles and responsibilities of BLOs in Konkani and BLAs in English were released. The event also featured a cultural programme showcasing Goa’s traditions and heritage.

The BLOs subsequently held a question-and-answer session with the Chief Election Commissioner, allowing them to raise concerns and seek clarification on issues related to their duties.
