WASHINGTON – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for pressing him on ending the Ukraine conflict, said the Indian leader has “very good ideas” aimed at finding a settlement acceptable to both sides.
PM Modi and Putin met in New Delhi during the September BRICS Summit, where the two leaders also discussed trade and wider India-Russia cooperation.
Putin said PM Modi continues to raise the issue despite the close relationship between New Delhi and Moscow.
He also thanked the Prime Minister for seeking an early resolution through peaceful means.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good and even friendly relations, personal good relations, constantly raises the question and asks the question about putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.
He said Modi had taken an active interest in efforts to identify solutions that could be accepted by the parties to the conflict.
“He has an avid interest and very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions. In that sense, naturally, the Prime Minister takes a neutral position but with an interest in the end of the conflict. I think it’s my duty to say that directly. And we are thankful to the Prime Minister for his ideas,” Putin said.
He also acknowledged PM Modi’s emphasis on resolving the conflict through dialogue.
“We are thankful for his desire to put an end to this conflict through peaceful means and as soon as possible,” Putin added.
PM Modi has maintained that India supports a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
In an August 2025 interview with Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun, he described India’s approach as “principled and humanitarian” and said both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had spoken to him about developments in the conflict.
“India has maintained a principled and humanitarian stance on the conflict which is equally appreciated by both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. In line with this, both the leaders spoke to me to share their perspectives on the developments related to the conflict. I reiterated India’s principled and consistent stand and encouraged dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict,” Modi said.
PM said New Delhi was prepared to support initiatives aimed at securing a peaceful settlement when asked about the role India could play in peace efforts.
“I have already indicated India’s willingness to support meaningful efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution of the conflict. I believe, by virtue of our good relations with both sides, including key stakeholders, we can strengthen efforts dedicated to the restoration of an early and lasting peace in Ukraine,” he said.
Modi and Putin during BRICS discussed closer trade ties, including the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030, as well as cooperation in infrastructure, energy, technology, defence and culture.
