New Delhi, 6th Oct: Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc marched towards the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday, raising slogans of “Save democracy” and “Save my vote” and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of “vote theft”.

Carrying posters and placards, the MPs gathered outside Parliament in the morning before beginning their march towards Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission’s headquarters.
The march was stopped before the MPs could proceed further. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi sat on the road along with other Opposition MPs after they were stopped from marching.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained during the INDIA bloc protest demanding the resignation of the poll body chief.

Rahul Gandhi was also seen standing on top of a barricade outside the Election Commission office as Opposition MPs continued their protest.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government and the Election Commission of undermining democratic rights.

“We are fighting against the injustice,” Kharge said, alleging that the government was trying to “eliminate the adult franchise” secured after Independence. He also described the Chief Election Commissioner as a “puppet of the government”.

The protest comes amid Opposition allegations concerning the conduct of elections and the integrity of the electoral process. The INDIA bloc MPs used the march to intensify their demand for accountability from the Election Commission and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.

However, two key Opposition parties, the DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stayed away from the INDIA bloc march, indicating differences within the Opposition alliance over the protest.

The demonstration led to a high-profile confrontation outside the Election Commission headquarters, with Opposition leaders continuing to raise slogans and demand action over their allegations of electoral irregularities.
