Cooch Behar, 7th Oct: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around 8.3 kg of foreign-origin gold valued at approximately ₹12.37 crore in an intelligence-led operation along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged cross-border gold smuggling operation.
DRI officers, acting on intelligence and following discreet surveillance along the border, intercepted four individuals travelling on two motorcycles on October 5. The suspects were travelling along the route between Chowdhurihat on the Indo-Bangladesh border and Cooch Behar.
During a personal search, officers recovered gold biscuits concealed in specially tailored cloth waist belts worn by two of the suspects.
A total of 72 gold biscuits, each weighing approximately 116 grams, were recovered from the four individuals.
The seized gold, weighing around 8.3 kg in total, was identified as foreign-origin gold and valued at approximately ₹12.37 crore.
The gold was seized under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and all four individuals were arrested.
The operation followed a period of discreet surveillance by DRI officials along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Cooch Behar district.
The agency said it remains focused on dismantling organised gold-smuggling networks operating through cross-border routes and identifying the wider syndicates involved in the movement and distribution of smuggled gold.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
